WWF Hoi Ha Wan Marine Life Education Centre

In 2000, HSBC Hong Kong donated more than US$1.8 million to the construction of the WWF Hoi Ha Wan Marine Life Education Centre. The Hoi Ha Wan area was one of Hong Kong’s first marine parks, established in 1996. The centre itself is built over water offering unique opportunities to study coral and marine life. There are also aquaria, exhibitions, special displays and laboratory facilities. The initial donation allowed the centre to acquire a glass-bottomed boat to further the opportunity for visitors to observe the local marine life.

Since the centre opened in 2004, more than 400 education programmes have been organised for schools and community groups and more than 14,000 visitors have benefited from the facilities. HSBC staff members are still involved with the centre on a voluntary basis. Three people have been trained to guide education tours and ten staff members organised a programme in May 2006 whereby local students could learn about Hong Kong’s marine environment and practise their English language skills with HSBC staff volunteers.
