The world's local bankHSBC in Luxembourg became the first bank in Luxembourg to purchase green electricity – electricity produced from 100% renewable sources. The Luxembourg Energy Office (LEO) has committed to provide green energy and HSBC has pledged to use LEO's green electricity from 2006-2008. The LEO's green electricity is certified as 100% renewable from hydroelectric plants in Austria and Switzerland.
HSBC in Luxembourg has taken this step in support of HSBC's pledge of carbon neutrality and hopes that its example will encourage other financial institutions to make similar commitments. HSBC managers accepted a certificate of acknowledgment from the city of Luxembourg for their contribution to reducing the city's CO2 emissions.
