Asia-Pacific Energy Reduction

In order to reduce energy consumption across operations in Asia-Pacific, the Group has implemented an energy efficiency programme that includes technology/equipment upgrades, department consumption reviews, partnering with suppliers/service providers, and internal energy awareness campaigns.

Recent highlights of energy reduction campaigns across Asia-Pacific include:

  • Energy-smart software – Most areas in Asia-Pacific have installed energy-smart software on new computers. This software incorporates energy-saving technologies such as shutting down computers which have been left idle. This has led to an estimated reduction of 90 tonnes of CO2 – equivalent to that produced by a 747 round-trip flight from London to Zurich.
  • ECO rooms – In India, the bank has developed ECO rooms which enable staff to work beyond office hours while also conserving energy. The ECO rooms are self-contained, supported by standalone air conditioners with data connectivity where staff can work outside normal working hours or on public holidays without starting the central air conditioner.
  • Chillers – High efficiency chillers, variable speed drives, and high efficiency motors for chilled water pumps and cooling towers have been installed in Malaysia under the air conditioning plant replacement programme. The old chiller in Bangunan Medan Pasar was replaced with a high efficiency chiller. The façade of Bangunan HSBC was upgraded with improved solar shielding, and energy saving equipment was installed in branches.
