India: Ganges river

The Ganges river basin is a critical resource for 200 million of India's people and its wildlife. WWF will be working in the Ganges river basin from Gangotri in the Himalayan foothills to Kanpur in northern India on various aspects of environmental flows of rivers, climate impact on glaciers and preparation for climate change effects in vulnerable communities. The main aims are:

  • Ensure sustainable river flows to conserve biodiversity and support livelihoods;
  • Establish energy-efficient mechanisms and sustainable water-use systems for selected industries in the area;
  • Encourage local cities to lead the way towards energy sustainability and reduce impact on the Ganges.
