The world's local bank
HSBC has supported the Rivers of the World art project (formerly known as the Puzzle Pathway) for a second year, in conjunction with the British Council. The project forms part of the (London) Mayor's Thames Festival and focused on the river Thames in the UK, the Ganges in India, the Yangtze in China, the Liesbeeck in South Africa and the Nile in Egypt.
Classes of 13-14 year-olds in each of the five countries studied their river under the themes: River of Life; Polluted River; Resourceful River; Working River; River City and River Culture and created drawings, paintings, photographs and other media. Each class's work was integrated, with the help of professional art and design facilitators, and manipulated on computer to produce a single artwork.
The students produced a total of 58 works of art, each measuring 3x1 metres (10x3 feet), which will be exhibited in high profile riverside locations in the cities involved in the project (London, Cairo, Capetown, Chongqing and Kolkata), while smaller versions of the artwork will be toured to more formal galleries.
