Hong Kong – Scholarship schemes

HSBC overseas scholarship scheme

The Hongkong Bank Foundation supports students from Hong Kong universities every year to study abroad at a top university for a year. In order to apply, students must be undergraduates who are not in their final year and have not had extensive experience of studying or living abroad. They must show excellent academic aptitude and commitment to their community. In 2006/07, 11 students were awarded scholarships and in 2007/08 there are funds of US$660,000 to support up to 20 students. The scholarship provides airfare, tuition fees, room and board, and money towards living expenses during the students' year abroad.

Candidates are nominated by their universities and then interviewed by a panel of senior HSBC executives. The panel makes a recommendation to the advisory committee of the Hongkong Bank Foundation which then issues conditional offers to the students (subject to their work during the academic year). At the end of the year, if the student has achieved the necessary academic marks, appropriate funds are then made available.

HSBC Hong Kong scholarship and bursary programmes

This programme benefits students at nine Hong Kong universities. Separate allocations are made for Hong Kong natives, disabled students, non-local students, and Hong Kong students studying for one year in mainland China. In 2005/06, 174 students were given an HSBC scholarship or bursary.
