Global – HSBC Chevening scholars

The Chevening project began in 1983 to enable talented people from all over the world to pursue postgraduate study in the UK. To date, more than 40,000 students from 150 countries have participated in the scheme. HSBC has supported 27 scholars per year since 2000.

HSBC companies around the world help select the 27 HSBC Chevening scholars. The many countries have included Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Korea, South Africa, and Indonesia.

Competition for a Chevening scholarship is extremely fierce, with only about 4% of applicants being successful. Criteria include:

  • Possession of a first degree with proven academic excellence;
  • Established in a career path with the prospect of becoming a leader in that field;
  • Good English language skills;
  • Proven commitment to their country and the socio-ecological development of that country.

Scholars are chosen based on these criteria so that they and their countries will receive the greatest benefit from the student's time in the UK. Students not only gain academic knowledge but can develop international connections and enhance their professional standing. UK universities benefit from the knowledge, experience, and cultural diversity that these students provide.

The Chevening project is run by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council. For more information on the Chevening project, including how to apply, click here.
