Bahrain – Star School

HSBC Bahrain enables government school students to study at King's English Language School in the UK for five weeks in the summer. In 2006, two students were selected to receive this opportunity from the 20 students who submitted a 500-word essay on one of four questions.

A panel of judges chosen by the British Council examined the essays for creativity, grammar and presentation and selected the top ten students to progress to the interview stage. The interview was conducted by the British Council and students were asked such questions as, 'How will you react/behave/take action if you face any discrimination?'.

One of the two successful students wrote the following about his time in the UK:

'The teachers were very nice and kind and I had a good time with every one of them, also they were very patient with us and they have the best ways to teach you English... The host family that I was staying with was very nice, welcoming, loving, kind and very generous and I still write to them by e-mail and text messages.'

While the students are studying at King's, they live with a British family. This gives them the opportunity, not only to improve their language skills, but to learn about British culture in an interactive and personal manner.

In 2007, HSBC will again support the Star School to send two students to the UK to study.
