A mentor and mentoree

USA – Jumpstart

Jumpstart began with a donation from HSBC to Riverside High School in Buffalo, New York for new computers and is now a network of support for four New York high schools (students aged 14-18) of low to moderate income. As well as financial support, HSBC employees are involved on advisory boards, delivering workshop lectures and acting as mentors.

There are various components to the programme which provide comprehensive support for the students involved:

  • Volunteer support - HSBC employees are matched with students as mentors, providing advice and guidance. In some instances, HSBC also supports a formal mentoring programme which facilitates matching students with mentors from the wider community;
  • Direct training - Training workshops and courses are provided for students and often taught by HSBC employees. These are held on such topics as business etiquette or job readiness training;
  • Community network - Through advisory boards and external networks, HSBC cooperates with faculty, staff, parents and outside organisations to provide ongoing support for the children in these schools.

Over 130 staff members are involved with this programme which has been running since 1995.
