USA – Higher education support for students

HSBC believes education opens doors of opportunity. While this starts at a young age, HSBC also recognises the importance of higher education and the obstacles that may deter many students from taking up the opportunity to attend a higher education institution. HSBC North America has made student access to higher education one of its priorities for the past twenty years and works with several partners to facilitate this process.

The United Negro College Fund:

  • The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was founded in 1944 and has helped more than 350,000 students earn degrees. It also supports 39 member colleges and universities and helps to increase access to technology at historically black colleges and universities.
  • HSBC North America has supported UNCF for more than 20 years. Since 2001, we have committed over US$2 million to the HSBC/UNCF Corporate Scholars Program. This programme provides essential financial support for students as well as paid internships at HSBC offices. The scholarships awarded range from US$5,000 - $15,000 per year and 36 interns have worked at HSBC since 2002. The internships provide professional experience for the students and add diversity to the HSBC workplace.
  • HSBC employees also pledge money to support UNCF through the annual United for Hope campaign, which is UNCF's second largest private workplace-giving programme.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund:

  • Hispanic-Americans are the largest minority in the United States. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) was founded in 1975 to support access for this minority to higher education and has so far awarded more than 78,000 scholarships.
  • HSBC North America has been working with HSF since 2003, donating over US$990,000 in support of HSF, of which US$600,000 went to the HSF/HSBC North America Scholarship Program. This programme has provided financial support to more than 200 students since 2003.
  • Alongside the HSF/HSBC North America Scholarship Program, additional funding has been allocated for a number of projects, including educational outreach. In 2006, HSBC provided a grant to the HSF/The Princeton Review College Road Map - a bilingual university planning tool offering key information to students and their families to help them prepare for higher education. In 2007, HSBC is supporting a programme of Town Hall meetings. This project is designed to inform and inspire students and their families as they prepare for higher education (university) by providing information on financial aid, admissions, testing and self-assessment.

Cristo Rey Network:

  • The Cristo Rey Network is a network of 19 high schools (14-18 year-olds) throughout the United States at which 91% of students are minorities. To prepare students for higher education, schools operate longer days and academic years, and employ a combination of counselling, academic assistance and small class sizes.
  • All students at Cristo Rey Network schools participate in a work study programme through which they finance the majority of the cost of their education, gain real world job experience, grow in self-confidence, and realise the relevance of their education.
  • HSBC North America has supported the Cristo Rey Network since 2003, initially with one school, and now supports internship positions with 14 schools. HSBC has committed over US$850,000 in funding in the last five years.
  • The HSBC Non-profit Work Study Program supports 20 jobs for high school students, across 14 cities and states. HSBC underwrites students' positions at seven non-profit organisations (such as Junior Achievement). Each internship supports the cost of student tuition and provides valuable work experience for the students. Since 2003, HSBC has contributed over US$600,000 in support of Cristo Rey programmes and initiatives. By linking Cristo Rey with our current non-profit partners, HSBC North America is able to leverage the staffing needs of the organisation with the employment needs of the students.
  • HSBC employees get involved with the Cristo Rey Network by teaching classes, providing guidance on applying to university, fundraising and participating in projects that enrich the school environment.
