USA – Boys & Girls Clubs of America

The Boys & Girls Clubs provide a safe place for disadvantaged young people to spend after-school time to help them reach their full potential. The centres offer supervised recreation, computer and exercise facilities, study areas, and a chance to socialise and develop in a safe environment.

Set up in 1860, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America currently help nearly five million boys and girls across all 50 US states plus Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and US military bases around the world.

HSBC has been a partner of the Boys & Girls Clubs since 1937, and has supported many different activities. Support originally focused on Chicago, where the following projects were helped:

  • Union League Boys & Girls Club's Education & Career Development Program - This helps young people to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, explore career options, prepare for employment, and learn about technology. More than 1,600 children take part in this programme every year.
  • 2005 Senior Management Leadership Conference - More than 200 HSBC executives refurbished the General Robert E Wood Boys & Girls Club in Chicago - including developing a technology lab and creating murals - and HSBC also contributed US$75,000.

HSBC has now expanded its relationship with the Boys & Girls Clubs to reflect our national profile. Programmes supported include:

  • National Kids Day 2006 - 190 HSBC employees participated in 12 National Kids Day projects throughout Florida. HSBC gave each of the clubs a US$5,000 grant to organise activities for this day, which celebrates the importance of spending quality time with one's children.
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, California - HSBC contributed US$500,000 toward the building of the Harden Youth Development Center. Employees volunteer their time and skills and HSBC also contributes US$40,000 annually to the club's environmental education initiative. This teaches kids about how their actions affect the environment, both positively and negatively, and works with local environmental agencies to expand the available resources.
