The world's local bank
HSBC in South Africa only has around 120 employees, yet is deeply involved in supporting education in its community.
One school with which HSBC has a relationship is Tshelamanzi School in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. The school was founded in 1995 with support from the community, despite being situated in a very poor area, and currently accommodates approximately 200 children. In 2002 HSBC provided funding for the building of new classrooms and, beginning in 2005, supported the building of a science laboratory. We are now assisting in the construction of a computer centre. Many of the children arrive at the school barefoot and the opportunity to learn about computers is unique.
HSBC also provides used computers to other disadvantaged schools. Due to continual technological advances, HSBC often replaces computers that still work well. These computers can be wiped of their information by IT specialists and donated to schools to enable vocational and technological programmes. Dipalo School of Information and Communication Technology in Soweto benefited from a donation of 30 computers, enabling them to offer a wide variety of vocational courses. The computer cascading programme has been running since 2004.
