HSBC in Singapore launched its youth excellence initiative in 2000 to create developmental opportunities for talented young people to achieve their full potential in the areas of music, leadership, environmental conservation, community service and entrepreneurship.
These young people are also encouraged to use their talents to support their peers and enrich the community. Previous initiative award winners have organised fundraising concerts, raising almost US$500,000 to date, to provide basic education for school children and support for hearing-impaired students.
2006 winners were 11-year-old violinist Gabriel Ng and 19-year-old youth leader Shaun Low, who received their awards from the President of Singapore, His Excellency S R Nathan, at a ceremony organised by HSBC.
At the ceremony, HSBC made donations of US$128,000 to the National Arts Council, which will help support Gabriel's professional development at the Yehudi Menuhin Music School, and US$64,000 to the National Youth Achievement Award Council to create local and overseas youth development initiatives for Shaun and other outstanding young people. This included a US$6,400 grant for Shaun for his own personal development or to lead a community initiative. HSBC will organise a fundraising concert to benefit the community at which Gabriel will be a soloist.
