Learning a new skill builds confidence and promotes a positive attitude. HSBC has supported sailing academies across the UK since 2004, helping almost 400 disadvantaged students learn to sail, while increasing their self-confidence, learning how to work as a team and communicate with each other.
In May and June 2007, more than 70 students joined two four-day HSBC sailing academies at Rockley Point in Poole. Aimed at students aged 14 and 15 who had little or no experience in sailing, over the four-day residential course they had the opportunity to work toward their Stage 1 or even Stage 2 sailing certificate and to learn the rules for sailing safely.
In a similar manner to the students who join the HSBC voyage of achievement, these students are able to learn a new skill and make new friends. Students who have attended HSBC sailing academies have demonstrated improved self-confidence and motivation and these benefits translate into better performance in the classroom when students return to school. HSBC will continue supporting sailing academies through 2009.
