New Zealand – The Gifted Kids Programme

The Gifted Kids Programme (GKP) started in 2000 to provide educational opportunities and support for academically gifted children from low income families. Now working with more than 500 students from over 100 schools, it provides gifted students with one separate day of learning each week, alongside other gifted students, at one of GKP's seven programmes in participating schools.

Based on the New Zealand curriculum, GKP places the emphasis on creative, caring and critical thinking, as well as offering specialist instruction in areas such as chess or languages. A variety of learning adventures and educational trips also provide opportunities and challenges which would not usually be available to these youngsters to help them to reach their full potential.

HSBC began working with the Gifted Kids Programme in 2004. As well as sponsorship, GKP also receives a one-third share of all proceeds raised from the HSBC-sponsored 'Round the Bays' community event. In 2006 this was US$51,000. HSBC staff also volunteer their time throughout the year and help GKP by supervising children on school trips.
