India - Madhapur Mandal School

India – Madhapur Mandal school

This government-run school was in a run-down, two-room building with few resources and suffered from irregular student attendance until the HSBC Group Service Centre (GSC) in Hyderabad, India adopted it in early 2005. HSBC staff raised funds for improvements which were matched by the bank - nearly US$70,000 in total.

The GSC made a two year commitment to the school and has so far implemented the following improvements:

  • Constructed a new school building;
  • Built a computer lab and library and helped to equip them;
  • Helped implement free midday meals for all students;
  • Added a clean drinking water plant.

Almost 500 students now attend the school regularly and work has just begun on adding a second floor. The new floor will help to increase student numbers even further and give them access to higher levels of qualification.

Thirty dedicated HSBC staff are involved in the project on a day-to-day basis. They work with a school liaison officer who manages the project in conjunction with the school authorities and the local government as well as HSBC. Around 15 staff members visit the school on a regular basis and are involved with teaching computer studies, organising sports and cultural competitions, and training teachers. An additional 400 HSBC staff have visited the school and nearly 1,700 employees took part in two walkathons to raise funds for Madhapur Mandal.
