Commit to Change
The world's local bankHSBC France launched a new education fund in 2006, with funding of US$2 million. It has committed to assist educational access programmes throughout France until 2012 with a number of themes. The first applications for support were invited under the theme 'Culture', for a maximum three-year commitment, and 19 projects were chosen.
Each project must use culture as a way of facilitating access to education for young people from underprivileged areas. For example, one project selected in 2006 was Chemins de savoirs which uses writing, music and dance workshops, poetry and painting to improve academic results. Each project must submit a report of achievements every six months.
New projects are invited for 2007, again under the theme 'Culture', for children under 13 years of age. From 2007, HSBC staff will be able to volunteer on projects in their own time may benefit from days off work to participate in specific programmes.
