China – Rural teacher training course

HSBC organised a rural school teacher training course in July 2006, to provide a forum for rural teachers in China to learn new techniques and share best practice.

China has revolutionised its education system in the past two decades, but accurate communication and distribution of resources is difficult due to the large number of schools in rural and disadvantaged areas. Such schools often have fewer resources, less well-trained teachers and less chance to learn about new ideas or teaching techniques. The HSBC training course was designed to support these disadvantaged schools by enhancing the quality of teaching.

Organised by China Charity Federation, more than 100 teachers from 22 provinces and municipalities took part in the two-week training programme in Beijing. Fifteen course instructors from prominent Beijing education institutes taught on the course, which included visits to Beijing schools. A survey showed that the teachers also shared their learnings with an additional 18,000 teachers in their communities within six months of their return.
