The programme will focus on three areas:

  • Training for caregivers at street children centres in urban areas;
  • Training for rural village school teachers;
  • Facility improvements for street children centres and rural schools.

By 2009, the programme should have trained over 800 teachers and caregivers, benefiting around 400,000 children.

This new programme was announced in the tenth year of collaboration between the China Charity Federation and HSBC. Since 1997, the fund has given over US$3 million to more than 120 projects focusing on various community issues, such as:

  • Rural education;
  • Elderly care;
  • Vocational training for the unemployed and rural migrants;
  • AIDS education.

Jiang Yanfang from Hebei Province attended a rural migrant training programme on how to care for the elderly. She now works at a care home for the elderly and is able to support her children's education.
