Brazil – HSBC Solidarity Institute

HSBC Brazil has been supporting education and environment projects for several years in line with HSBC's global policy. To oversee these and future social investments, the HSBC Solidarity Institute (Institute) was launched in 2006. Working through this Institute allows HSBC in Brazil to increase synergies between local initiatives and organisations and to promote greater employee participation.

Brazil is the most densely populated country in Latin America with 180 million inhabitants, 63 million of whom are under 18. Government initiatives in 1990 helped push basic education attendance up to 97% - one of the highest among emerging countries. Education quality, however, suffered following this vast increase in the numbers of students and youth unemployment is almost double the adult rate at 16.1%

This is a major societal issue for the inhabitants of Brazil and thus a main focus for the HSBC Solidarity Institute's educational initiatives. 75% of the Institute's funding is focused on education and largely supports professional training for disabled people and improving the quality of rural education.
