Vocational education for disabled young people

The HSBC Solidarity Institute in Brazil set up several projects designed to provide vocational training for disabled people. A fund of US$120,000 was invested in 10 projects out of 118 submitted in 2006.

In 2007, this fund will help to improve the basic education quality for disabled children and adolescents. Higher standards of basic education raise disabled students' chances of academic success and future professional prospects.

Some of the main goals in 2006 included:

  • To improve formal learning levels;
  • To stimulate musical and artistic abilities;
  • To contribute to the maintenance of good health;
  • To develop autonomy.

Projects in which we invested include:

  • Building the future by hands - 20 young hearing-impaired people were trained in furniture recovering.
  • Digital station - 600 disabled people were taught basic computer science skills and teachers were given advice on how to deliver accessible learning.
  • Hydroponics greenhouse training - Nearly 60 students were trained to run hydroponics greenhouses (growing plants in nutrient fluids rather than soil) so that they can provide income for themselves by growing and selling vegetables.
