Australia – HSBCkids

HSBC Australia launched HSBCkids in 2001, building on Barnados' established 'Kids Friends' and 'Tutoring' programmes in Australia, which have helped 190,000 children since 1921. HSBCkids offers one-to-one adult attention to disadvantaged children who need support from a special person outside the family.

Young people can be provided with a friend or tutor or both, depending on their needs. While a friend may offer a child the chance to share problems, interests or good times with a supportive adult outside the family, a tutor can offer extra educational help with literacy, numeracy and homework.

Recognising that family financial difficulties can also threaten child welfare, HSBC launched a new financial literacy programme in 2006, alongside HSBCkids. The new, three-pronged programme focuses on information, education and active support. Active support encompasses:

  • Celebration Planner: this helps families develop saving skills to plan for and cope with the extra stresses in December and January, with Christmas and back-to-school requirements;
  • Fast track: a programme that helps the family work out how to repay debts and to plan budgets to reduce future financial stress.

Children and families are selected by Barnados and HSBC staff are encouraged to volunteer to help on the programmes. HSBC staff also help throughout the year with activities such as trips to the botanic gardens, using their volunteer leave day.
