USA – Foundation for Teaching Economics

The Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) was founded in 1975 to help young people consider national and international issues through economics and to promote excellence in economic education by helping teachers of economics become more effective educators.

HSBC North America has supported FTE since 1996 and gave a total of US$865,000 between 1996 and 2007 to support individual teacher programmes.

In 2006, HSBC North America underwrote FTE's 'Institute on the Environment and the Economy', a national programme designed to help teachers apply economic principles and solutions to complicated environmental problems, such as water management and controlling air pollution. Delivered through fifteen, four-day teacher workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, the initiative reached 450 teachers and impacted approximately 90,000 students. Almost 100% of teachers who attended an FTE programme felt their participation would improve their teaching and would recommend it to a colleague, while students' economics test scores rose by 25%.

HSBC is also providing support to underwrite the nine workshops in FTE's 2007 'The Environment and the Economy' programme. The workshops will have reached more than 700 teachers by year-end 2007.
