UK – Management Academy Programme

The HSBC Management Academy Programme (MAP) offers school leavers an opportunity to join HSBC on a structured development programme that aims to provide trainees with the support and training needed to obtain their first management job at HSBC within three years.

In the UK, students have the option to leave school at 16 years old and pursue vocational training (or get a job) or to stay in school for further studies, usually with the aim of going to university. The MAP programme requires students to have completed further studies after age 16, but offers an alternative to the traditional university then career route. While the programme is not exclusive to these students, it does recognise that they have valuable qualities which will supplement the HSBC team and offers them an opportunity to demonstrate these qualities, learn new skills and apply them towards a career path.

The training is skills based and participants are rotated through a diverse range of jobs within retail, commercial and Premier divisions to help them decide in which area they would like to develop a career. The trainees can also choose to take a professional industry-recognised qualification as well as a degree as part of the programme. HSBC covers the cost of their studies for these and gives them study leave – so they could be getting a degree without any student debt.

The programme works as follows:

  • During the first two years, trainees learn and work in a variety of rolls in all three areas;
  • In the third year, they choose the area in which they want to specialise;
  • After finishing the programme, they will be given a management roll in the area of their third-year choice.

In addition to learning the skills required for becoming part of the HSBC team, students also take part in internal skills-based courses, plan and lead community projects in support of educational or environmental initiatives, have the opportunity to pursue professional qualifications and build up a network of HSBC colleagues.

Launched in April 2007, there are currently 200 trainees on the MAP scheme, with an aim to increase this number to 300 by the end of 2007. New trainees are admitted to the scheme twice a year and more information can be found on the MAP website.
