The world's local bank
To help educate young people (aged 12-18) about the world of finance and budgeting, HSBC Hong Kong opened its doors for a series of eight, monthly workshops, each for 30 students, held in branches from October 2006 to May 2007. Twenty HSBC staff volunteers were trained to conduct the three-hour interactive workshops advising students on basic financial planning including savings, credit, insurance and investment.
There was a huge response with 75 schools applying for the eight workshops. The teenagers came away from the seminar with greater self confidence and a better understanding of the importance of financial planning and how to achieve this.
Alongside the workshops, HSBC launched the HSBC Young Financial Planner Competition, an inter-school competition to raise young people’s awareness of financial planning and investments. This ran from April-November 2007 and attracted 531 teams from 167 secondary schools, involving around 2,000 students in Forms 4-7 (senior secondary).
After attending an initial seminar on basic financial planning, each team chose a hypothetical case to solve and created a financial plan, written in either Chinese or English. A board reviewed the plans and chose teams to present to a panel of judges and answer questions about their plan. The five finalist teams were invited to present their plan in front of judges and an invited audience in November. The judges looked for a well-organised plan and presentation, clear replies to their questions and the ability to recommend a wide range of investment tools in their plans.
The winning team was from Belilios Public School, who were awarded a US$1,280 development fund and a two-day, tailor-made 'Experience HSBC' learning programme, including a one-day tour, career talk and lateral thinking class coupled with a one-day attachment to the bank's wealth management team.
The competition included teachers' and students' seminars and presentation skills workshops. HSBC partnered with the Hong Kong Institute of Education to present the competition, with full support from the Education Bureau.
